Our Medsoc subcommittee retreat to Bulli Caravan Park wasn’t just an ordinary getaway – it was a chance to reset during a hectic term and connect with one another. From the onset, the park welcomed us with a refreshing chance of pace on a Friday evening, offering a peaceful and scenic view of the beach.

After a cheeky Chinese takeaway dinner, my cabin tried learning K-pop dances. Each one ended up being too difficult, but failing spectacularly was a blast in its own way as we committed too seriously to choreography we had no hope of mastering in one evening. It was in these carefree and playful moments where real bonding happened. But don’t just take my word for it. here are some insightful and deep words a first-year attendee had to say:

“My favourite part of the retreat was telling my friend a horror story when it was pitch black as we walked on the beach. This was after he had just watched the horror movie…!” – Eric Hwang

On the second afternoon, perhaps impulsively, our subcommittee decided to go for a 5km run along the coast as the sun began to set. Running together into the chilly sea breeze while watching the sky dappled in various hues of orange, blue and purple was refreshing in its own unique way. Whilst I gradually began breathing harder, some of my friends would vlog, jogging almost effortlessly.

The retreat was a great opportunity for wholesome bonding activities. From cooking a Michelin star lasagna and grilled cheese to sharing laughter during blind karaoke, each moment let us unwind and relax from the midst of our busy term. By the end of the night, as we snacked on probably too many sweets, we traded stories and shot questions at one another.

“Subcom retreat was truly a precious opportunity to spend quality time – in the midst of a hectic uni term – with friends and fellow subcom members. Although the beach-side cabins and dreamy sunset views were certainly a plus, it was definitely the people that I was surrounded by that made the retreat an unforgettable experience for me.” – Ethan Du

Despite the late evening, on our last day at retreat, our subcom woke up early to watch the sunrise. The sky slowly shifted from a deep blue to a soft orange as the first light crept over the horizon. The sun rose rapidly, almost catching us off guard. What was at one moment a soft line of gold then spilled over the horizon into a brilliant orange burst. In just the span of a few minutes, the chill of dawn paved way to a warmth which almost seemed to envelope all of us, a shared sense of connection which lingered well beyond the sunrise.
