Read Time:1 Minute, 46 Second

Carolyn Wang ed. Veerein Sheorayan

Mobitz Type 1 (Wenckebach) is a type of second-degree heart block. It occurs when the time taken for electrical signals to travel from the atria to the ventricles lengthens with each heartbeat, eventually skipping a beat entirely.

The cycle then repeats itself.

In my dreams I am surrounded by red string,
branching through grooves and over ridges,
dancing its way down to you.
You who sends the blood rushing to my face,
and I who watches in the mirror,
marvelling at the thrill of seeing this proof of life.

Do you know I sometimes envision myself as a hatchling
wrapped in a sac
held frictionless in fluid.
I think you know I risk slipping.
But your hands are there like the great vessel which holds me.
I’m still blushing when I look in the mirror.
Will I ever get tired of this?

There is an oval-shaped window in the wall of my room.
When I was young I would make phones out of tin cans
and thread the wire through –

hear me?
I will give you one end of the phone.
The spark must go through.
Isn’t it dizzying? Your landline, my lifeline.

You tell me not to sulk and I believe that it will always be us. (It’s a sulcus.)
Don’t pull on my heart strings – please –
Don’t close yourself off when we were made for this,
for the contents of my self to spill into yours.
This is not impulse, it is nature.
I will watch the autumn leaves pile up,
wait for the cold blue blood to drain.
I will fold myself at your door, but I will be vain and selfish,
and I will skip stones across the gutter between us.

Delivered.

I am Werther. You are Lotte.
And I am beating to the thrum of the waves,
thumping over and over
come-home, come-home, come-home.
