Lectures in Patricia O’Shane Building, tutorials in Wallace Wurth G06/7 and Scenario Group Sessions (SGs) in Wallace Wurth SG Rooms (or IASB if you’re lucky). This week, The Jugular brings you a comprehensive review of all the places you might hope to find yourself (or not) across the course of your degree.

Sir John Clancy Auditorium

Usually only reserved for start-of-term lectures, it hosts the rare occasion of the whole cohort being under the same roof. Little known fact: Sir John Clancy wanted to design a theatre where the lecturer could hear the faintest whispers from the students so there may be less chattering. The design worked so perfectly that it inspired the design of the Sydney Opera House, and the meagre lecture hall was turned into an auditorium, where UNSW orchestras play to this day.

Rating: 7/10

Wallace Wurth LG03

A very cozy theatre, you can lock in at the front, or play Clash Royale® with your friends at the very back. LG03 seems to be used by MedSoc more than lecturers, to the point that this room is forever entangled in my mind with the smell of pizza. It’s never locked, so if you have 2 hours to kill between classes, it’s a good time to come in and play 1 hour and 59 minutes of Civilisation 6® with your friends after locking in for 3 whole Anki cards. Nonetheless, it would’ve been better if there were individual charging ports at each seat.

Rating: 6/10

Wallace Wurth G06

The prac room. This is the room where you take photos of histology labels knowing fully that they will sit peacefully in your camera roll, unopened, for the next 6 years. In G06, the seating plan is arranged by friend groups, and your proximity to the centre is directly proportional to how locked in you are. If you’re sitting near the end on your right hand side when you first enter the room, congratulations, you’re getting nothing done for the next 2 hours.

The charging port is easy to reach and numerous, and there’s a mic on each table that no one dares to use. This is a very versatile room, and a good deal of either histopath learning OR friend group bonding happens here (mutually exclusive).

Rating: 7/10

Wallace Wurth G08

The ITP room. The circular desk arrangement ironically makes it harder to talk to people not immediately next to you due to the size of the desks. It was a time to discover yourself and break from high school naivete. Everything was new and exciting, and relationships began to form. It was an experience so detached yet akin to high school – we were still kids, talking about games and hang outs and society events, and dreaming of the future in the most outlandish ways.

At times I think of that freshly inaugurated First Year, sitting for the first time in his SG room. I wonder what he would think of me now – whether I’ve proven myself worthy of the dreams and ambitions he once held. While these rooms saw me zoning out of SG and fumbling with my ID card to open the doors, their sense of nostalgia makes them one of the best rooms for a medicine class.

<figure
